Gombe National Park is a legendary destination best known for its chimpanzee population and the groundbreaking primate research conducted by Dr. Jane Goodall since the 1960s. The park offers a rare opportunity to observe wild chimpanzees in their natural forest habitat—an intimate, immersive experience that is both humbling and unforgettable.
Tucked between the dramatic escarpment and the deep blue waters of Lake Tanganyika, Gombe’s lush rainforest is home not only to chimpanzees but also to colobus monkeys, olive baboons, and a colorful array of birdlife. Towering fig trees, thick vines, and misty forest trails make the setting feel like a hidden, enchanted world.
Gombe offers a unique primate-centric safari unlike any other park in Tanzania. The highlight is undoubtedly trekking through the dense forest to find and spend time with habituated chimpanzee troops. Watching them interact, play, groom, and forage up close is an emotionally powerful experience and one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on Earth.
In addition to chimpanzees, visitors may see red-tailed and vervet monkeys, bush pigs, small forest antelopes, and more. The lake shoreline also hosts hippos and occasionally crocodiles, adding to the diversity of this small but rich ecosystem.
Though compact, Gombe boasts over 200 recorded bird species, making it a rewarding destination for birdwatchers. The forest canopy, open lake shores, and riverine environments attract everything from raptors and hornbills to colorful sunbirds and fish eagles.
Birding here is particularly enjoyable due to the peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere and the chance to spot species in close proximity, including the palm-nut vulture, trumpeter hornbill, crowned eagle, and Ross’s turaco.
The park’s scenery is as captivating as its wildlife. The thick montane forest is laced with hiking trails that lead to waterfalls, hidden valleys, and panoramic viewpoints over Lake Tanganyika. Visitors can swim in the crystal-clear lake, snorkel along the shore, or paddle in a boat to explore more of the lakeside wilderness.
Gombe’s untouched beauty and secluded setting make it a dream for photographers, nature lovers, and adventurers alike.
Visitors can enjoy several low-impact and enriching activities:
Chimpanzee Trekking: Guided forest walks to track and observe wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
Forest Hikes: Trails lead to scenic spots like Kakombe and Mkenke waterfalls or to the top of ridges with sweeping views.
Bird Watching: Discover forest and lakeshore species with the help of a guide and a pair of binoculars.
Swimming & Snorkeling: Cool off in the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika and enjoy the lake’s aquatic life.
Cultural Visits: Learn about the nearby fishing communities and the legacy of Jane Goodall’s conservation work.
Accessibility
By Road: Long drive from major cities to Kigoma, then boat ride to the park; more suitable for adventurous travelers.
By Air: Charter flights available from Arusha or Dar es Salaam to Kigoma, followed by a boat transfer (about 1–2 hours) to the park.
Why Visit Gombe?
One of the best places in the world to see wild chimpanzees
Rich primate and bird diversity in a pristine forest environment
Spectacular location along Lake Tanganyika
Unique activities including hiking, swimming, and primate trekking
Deep conservation history linked to Dr. Jane Goodall
Small and remote—ideal for intimate, off-the-beaten-path adventures
best time to visit Gombe National Park
The best time to visit Gombe National Park is during the dry season, from July to October, when forest trails are easier to navigate and chimpanzee trekking is most rewarding. During this period, vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot the chimpanzees and other primates as they move through the trees and along the forest floor.
Wildlife is more active and visible, and the dry conditions make hiking through the steep, forested terrain safer and more comfortable. The waters of Lake Tanganyika are also calmer and clearer, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or enjoying boat rides.

Reviews from Our Clients
EXCELLENT Based on 4 reviews caren2024-12-17Verified Breathtaking experiences, trustworthy agency that responds to every personal request. Everything top We did a 7 day private safari in the jeep. John our driver took us safely through the most rough roads and Joseph as a guide really made everything possible and brought country and people closer and we saw and experienced more than the big five first hand. The trip went smoothly and the accommodations were good. It is important that they are not far away from the route, as for the roads detours of only 20 km mean 1-2 hours of driving time....We have booked everything from Germany by mail and after a deposit paid the trip on site in arusha. We had a lot of fun and incredible experiences. Experiences Alessandro G2024-11-06Verified Amazing experience My experience with Astro Safari was fantastic, we did a 24h Safari between Saturday and Sunday and it was an incredible experience that I recommend to everyone. The guide and the food were excellent and I couldn't have asked for better Margherita M2024-10-21Verified THE MOST BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE It was the best experience of my life. A special thanks to our guides, they have been amazing to us. I stayed just two nights and three days but we saw all the animals of the savanna! The hardest animal to see for us was the lion, but our guides tried since the last moment to find them, and finally after some hours, we saw two beautiful lions laying under a tree , it was amazing. The food was great and also the tent was very comfortable. At the end of the experience, while we were leading out of the Serengeti park, we saw the most incredible thing: many baby lions with their moms and they dads. I strongly recommend this company, they have been very kind and friendly to us, it was amazing and I am very thankful to them.
