Mahale National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and enchanting destinations, best known for its wild population of chimpanzees. The park’s forested slopes are home to one of the largest and most researched groups of wild chimps in Africa. Tracking them through dense jungle, guided by expert trackers, offers a profound and intimate wildlife experience unlike any other in Tanzania.
Fringed by the clear, freshwater shores of Lake Tanganyika, the park’s scenery is stunning white sandy beaches, lush rainforest, and the dramatic peaks of the Mahale Mountains create a breathtaking natural setting. The remote location keeps crowds away, making Mahale a true hidden gem.
While chimpanzees are the stars of Mahale, the park is also home to other primates like red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervets. Bushbucks, leopards, and warthogs also inhabit the forests, though sightings are rare due to the dense vegetation.
The real magic lies in the up-close encounters with chimps. Observing their social behavior—grooming, feeding, or caring for young—offers deep insights into our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.
Mahale is rich in birdlife, with over 350 recorded species. The lush forest and lake environments attract a wide range of species from forest dwellers to waterbirds.
Colorful kingfishers, crowned eagles, and hornbills are commonly seen, along with migratory species from Europe and Asia, especially between November and April.
The landscape of Mahale is an alluring mix of tropical forest, rugged mountains, and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika the world’s second-deepest lake.
The Mahale Mountains rise sharply from the lakeshore, often wrapped in mist, offering incredible hiking and photography opportunities. The white sand beaches and turquoise water offer a peaceful contrast to the dense forest.
Chimpanzee Trekking: The highlight of any visit. Guided treks through the forest to find and observe chimpanzees.
Hiking & Nature Walks: Explore jungle trails with spectacular lake and mountain views.
Lake Activities: Swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling in Lake Tanganyika’s clear waters.

Accessibility
By Air: Charter flights to Kalilani or Mahale Airstrip, followed by a boat transfer.
By Boat: Private or scheduled boat transfers from Kigoma.
By Road: Limited accessibility; not recommended due to remoteness.
Why Visit Mahale?
Unmatched chimpanzee trekking experience
Stunning mix of forest, beach, and mountains
Crystal-clear lake with swimming and snorkeling opportunities
Remote, crowd-free safari destination
Unique birdlife and forest species not found elsewhere in Tanzania
best time to visit MAHALE National Park
The best time to visit Mahale Mountains National Park is during the dry season, from June to October, when chimpanzee trekking is at its most reliable. Trails are drier and easier to navigate, and the chimps stay closer to the lakeshore, making them easier to find. Wildlife sightings are more consistent, and the weather is sunny and pleasant ideal for trekking and enjoying Lake Tanganyika’s clear waters.
The green season from November to May brings lush forest scenery and a wider variety of birds, including migratory species. However, trekking can be more challenging due to muddy trails and less predictable chimpanzee movements.

Reviews from Our Clients
EXCELLENT Based on 4 reviews caren2024-12-17Verified Breathtaking experiences, trustworthy agency that responds to every personal request. Everything top We did a 7 day private safari in the jeep. John our driver took us safely through the most rough roads and Joseph as a guide really made everything possible and brought country and people closer and we saw and experienced more than the big five first hand. The trip went smoothly and the accommodations were good. It is important that they are not far away from the route, as for the roads detours of only 20 km mean 1-2 hours of driving time....We have booked everything from Germany by mail and after a deposit paid the trip on site in arusha. We had a lot of fun and incredible experiences. Experiences Alessandro G2024-11-06Verified Amazing experience My experience with Astro Safari was fantastic, we did a 24h Safari between Saturday and Sunday and it was an incredible experience that I recommend to everyone. The guide and the food were excellent and I couldn't have asked for better Margherita M2024-10-21Verified THE MOST BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE It was the best experience of my life. A special thanks to our guides, they have been amazing to us. I stayed just two nights and three days but we saw all the animals of the savanna! The hardest animal to see for us was the lion, but our guides tried since the last moment to find them, and finally after some hours, we saw two beautiful lions laying under a tree , it was amazing. The food was great and also the tent was very comfortable. At the end of the experience, while we were leading out of the Serengeti park, we saw the most incredible thing: many baby lions with their moms and they dads. I strongly recommend this company, they have been very kind and friendly to us, it was amazing and I am very thankful to them. Thank you very much to our driver and ‘Mr Buffalo’! I would definitely recommend Astro Safaris!
