The addition of the Usangu Game Reserve and other important wetlands to the park in 2008 increased its size to about 20,226\u00a0km<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0(7,809 sq mi), making it the largest protected area in Tanzania and East Africa.<\/p><p>The park is about 130 kilometres (81\u00a0mi) west of\u00a0Iringa. The park is a part of the 45,000 square kilometres (17,000\u00a0sq\u00a0mi) Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi\u00a0ecosystem,<sup id=\"cite_ref-TANAPA_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>which includes derived from the\u00a0Great Ruaha River, which flows along its southeastern margin and is the focus for game-viewing. The park can be reached by car on a dirt road from Iringa and there are two airstrips \u2013\u00a0Msembe airstrip\u00a0at Msembe (park headquarters), and Jongomeru Airstrip, near the Jongomeru Ranger Post.<\/p><p>The game viewing starts the moment the plane touches down. A giraffe races beside the airstrip, all legs and neck, yet oddly elegant in its awk wardness. A line of zebras parades across the runway in the giraffe\u2019s wake.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_custom_1594979857308\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>In the distance, beneath a bulbous baobab tree, a few representatives of Ruaha\u2019s 10,000 elephants \u2013 the largest population of any East African national park \u2013 form a protective huddle around their young. Second only to Katavi in its aura of untrammeled wilderness, but far more accessible, Ruaha protects a vast tract of the rugged, semi-arid bush country that characterizes central Tanzania.<\/p><p>Its lifeblood is the Great Ruaha River, which courses along the eastern boundary in a flooded torrent during the height of the rains, but dwindling thereafter to a scattering of precious pools surrounded by a blinding sweep of sand and rock. A fine network of game-viewing roads follows the Great Ruaha and its seasonal tributaries, where \u2013 during the dry season \u2013 impala, water-buck and other antelopes risk their life for a sip of life-sustaining water. And the risk is considerable: not only from the prides of 20 -plus lion that lord over the Savannah, but also from the cheetahs that stalk the open grassland and the leopards that lurk in tangled
